Dog Allergies - What Are Inhalant Allergies and How Do You Treat and Prevent Them?
This is the most common allergy due to the allergens that circulate the air in which your dog breaths. You have industrial air pollution for city dogs, trees, pollen, grass and mold in country dogs and household chemicals, air fresheners and even fibers from your synthetic carpet (which get in their paws) for indoor dogs.
Your pet does have an excellent immune system but even that can't stop everything. You will know when your dog has an allergy because he/she will have watery eyes, wheezing, sneezing and lots of itching.
A lot of the inhalant allergies are seasonal. Dogs in the country will probably have some symptoms from grass pollen in the spring and summer, but an indoor substance will continue all year long unless these allergens are recognized and eliminated.
Treatment for Inhalant Allergies
Give your dog cool baths with a shampoo that has eucalyptus, oatmeal or aloe vera in it. Any of these ingredients will relieve your dog's skin and will help to heal it after the allergen is removed.
If you have an extreme case of Inhalant Allergies, your Vet can suggest an antibiotic or even a antihistamine that is used for humans like Benadryl (diphenhydramine), Chlortrimetron, (chlorapheniramine) or Tavist (clemastine). Even though your dog can tolerate these drugs much better than a human can, it isn't good to keep them on it month after month. A drug is still a drug.
Last resort would be for your Vet to put your dog on a steroid like prednisone. These are very dangerous and only to be used is extremely severe cases and not for very long. Steroids can do damage to your dog's liver not to mention they can make your dog aggressive. Try to use natural solutions as much as possible.
Prevention for Inhalant Allergies
Giving your dog more essential fatty acids like Omega 3 and Omega 6 will help their resistant to Inhalant Allergies. Other fatty acids include flax seed, sunflower oil and wheat germ oil. (this will help to relive the itching on their skin) You will find that most dogs like the taste of oils, but if your dog does not, cold-water fish based oil (salmon or mackerel) work too.
The vitamins that your dog needs are Vitamins A, C and E and the mineral they need is selenium. Your dog needs these nutrients to maintain his/her health.
Finally, you MUST also keep your home clean. Vacuum your carpets, floors and furniture often. Dusting your furniture is also very important and make sure you clean your dog's bedding frequently.
